Valerian Root
Scientific Name: Valeriana officinalis
Valerian has a very unique and pungent smell, and it’s probably the first thing you'll notice about it. Some describe the smell as sweaty socks after a very long day working. Regardless, Valerian has properties that promote restful sleep and I benefit from it every night that I take it. In addition, it works very well to relieve anxiety and nervous tension.

I like to take this in tincture form because it’s quick and easy, something that’s valuable considering the smell factor. This way you can squeeze a dropper-full under your tongue and be on your way. Otherwise, in tea form you’re sure to fog up the area with a large stink cloud.
I also take this tincture regularly because there is research in Germany and Switzerland that suggests it lowers blood pressure as well. To be honest, I believe I’m fairly used to the smell now. I can identify it in the air at a moment’s notice and it doesn’t make me wince at the odor. I think it’s a small price to pay for a useful remedy for mental overactivity and insomnia. Have a go and try it yourself.
